John O’Brien Associate Director, BRE Innovation Park
John has benefited from working as both a contractor and a client in the building industry.

He has worked for Costain Construction’s Refurbishment Division and other contractors as well as being a self employed builder, before focussing on Asset Management in Social Housing.
John joined BRE to work on the Rethinking Housing Refurbishment agenda, to deliver sustainable refurbishment best practice to the industry and the DIY market, and managed the National Refurbishment Centre, a collaboration between BRE and Energy Saving Trust, featuring key stakeholders in the industry from suppliers, manufacturers, landlords and contractors. John also manages the Building Research Housing Group, whose members represent a significant stock of affordable and social housing.
John is the Associate Director for the Innovation Park at BRE Watford, a demonstrator for low to zero carbon buildings, showcasing construction types and technologies to help deliver on ambitious housing targets in the UK. The Park naturally features various approaches to off site methods.
John project managed the flagship refurbishment Victorian Terrace at BRE’s site at Watford, and the refurbished Smart home, formerly the Integer House. John has overseen three new builds on the Park in 2015, with more projects planned for 2016, as well as driving the refurbishment agenda.
